IT WAS TWO HOURS EARLIER in Colorado Springs than in New York, and Father Robert Barnes was sitting in the chair beside his bed. His Bible was beside him on his night table. He had opened it once, begun to read, then put it down. There was nothing for him in the old scriptures, nothing but the interpretations of men before him, inspired by truth and vision, yet weighted down with the fear, anger, and the uncertainties of the times in which they had lived. This was a new age and perhaps he, Robert Barnes, was a new prophet. The idea both humbled and exalted him.

He had been the recipient of a great gift. He had seen the child with his own eyes and felt the truth awakening inside him when their minds had touched. For Barnes it had been a religious resurrection and now he viewed it as something with the potential to bring people together, something alive and vital. It was what he had been thirsting for, starving for, not the symbolic wafers and wine; this was flesh and blood. He had spoken of the child in his radio broadcast and the switchboard at the station had lit up. People had been calling in from all over the region. He had touched a nerve. There was so much isolation out there, so much doubt and insecurity, so much fear. Attachment to symbols, wealth, and status, that was the disease of modern man. Tear down the walls. That was Robert Barnes’s message. Resurrect the human spirit.

Last night’s broadcast was only the beginning. Barnes could feel the energy building. It was inevitable. He had to talk, to tell the people what he had experienced. After his years in the wilderness, he was finally home. He would speak of the child again today, in his sermon. John Reed was his purpose, his calling. Old religion was stale. He’d seen something fresh and vibrant in the infant’s eyes. He’d seen a pure, knowing soul, a soul that had reached into him, cleansing him of his doubt.

Robert Barnes was determined to spread the word.
